The Digicel Group has officially shut down Loop News across the region. The announcement came today through a press release published on Loop’s own platforms. The media brand is no longer active, and the shutdown takes effect immediately.
SportsMax is next. Digicel confirmed the sports network will go offline on August 8.
On July 8, visitors to Loop News websites across the Caribbean were met with a farewell message titled “Loop News Bids the Caribbean a Grateful Goodbye.”
The post read:
“They say all good things must come to an end and so it is, that after 11 years of proudly serving the Caribbean as a trusted media partner, Loop News is today announcing the end of our operations. We’re proud of what we have achieved and of the people who came on the journey with us.
Since our inception, Loop has become a trusted source of news, winning several awards and building a passionate, engaged community of readers and viewers. As we reflect on over a decade of journalism and community impact, we are deeply grateful for the relationships we have built and the stories we have told.”
The message called it the end of an era. It said the decision wasn’t easy, but the team believed it was the right move for right now
Digicel Group has announced the planned wind-down of its flagship media platforms, SportsMax and Loop News, as the company intensifies its pivot toward enterprise-focused services through Digicel Business.
This group plans to step away from consumer-facing media altogether. The company’s shifting focus to its core business. That now includes integrated ICT services like cybersecurity, cloud, digital media, and compliance. It’s part of a bigger transition following its full acquisition of Jamaican tech firm Symptai.
“As we reposition Digicel for the future, our focus is on delivering secure, scalable enterprise-grade services,” said Liam Donnelly, Group Chief Business Officer. “While we are proud of the legacy of SportsMax and Loop News, we are now focused on where we can create the greatest value for our customers and communities.”
It’s a big move. Loop News had built a solid presence across the Caribbean and was one of the few digital-first news outlets covering multiple islands. SportsMax has been a staple in regional sports for years.
This marks a major shift in how regional audiences access news and sports content. With two of the biggest platforms disappearing, the Caribbean media space just got a lot more uncertain.
